Education & Early Work

Dr James van den Berg graduated from Birmingham University Dental School in 1993. He went straight into further vocational training as a general dentist in Ipswich, where he stayed for the next 3 years.

Being interested in the specialist field of periodontics since his undergraduate days, he started further training in 1997 at Queen Mary and The Royal London Hospital Dental School. James completed his Master’s degree in clinical dentistry in 1999 and started work as a clinical lecturer in the field of periodontics at The Royal London Hospital. There, he assisted in teaching, ongoing clinical and lab-based research, as well as in private practice limited to periodontics.

Dr. James van den Berg

James migrated to Australia in December 2001. He started work in 2 practices, specialising in periodontics. He still works in one of these Melbourne practices to this day.

James also completed a 2-year post-graduate diploma in clinical dentistry in periodontics from Melbourne University in 2012. He was then accepted into the Membership of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons (perio.) in 2013.

Specialist Periodontist

Since then, he has been working as a specialist periodontist in Geelong and Melbourne. James is well versed in all fields of periodontics, in addition to having extensive experience in implant surgery, having placed hundreds of implants since 1999.

One of his greatest interests is the use of lasers, which plays a critical role in:

  • aiding in periodontal treatment
  • enabling the production of a beautiful smile through aesthetic crown lengthening procedures
  • the treatment of peri-implant disease, especially with the use of laser therapy in the fields of biomodulation to improve healing and reduce pain. Biomodulation is becoming increasingly more important in medicine as a whole and its use in dentistry can help reduce post-operative surgical complications and pain.

James is the most experienced periodontist in Victoria in the use of all tissue lasers. He has utilised both hard and soft tissue lasers since 2004 and has often lectured on their use in surgical dentistry.

He is very keen on continually improving his clinical skills and utilising the most up-to-date equipment and procedures.
